Janskà (b. 1981) is a Czech figurative painter who studied in Slovakia before returning to her hometown Olomouc. The artist taught high-school art classes for 15 years before focusing entirely on her working practice.
Janskà has been exhibiting for the past ten years internationally and presented last spring her third show in the US. Adrian Sutton Gallery presented a focused curated selection of her work at Untitled Art Miami Beach 2024 which was critically acclaimed and will present a solo exhibition of her work this coming spring. The artist has been selected to participate in an institutional exhibition at Telegraph Museum in Olomouc in autumn 2025 alongside works by Caroline Walker.
Revisiting the female nude with a strong use of colours and focusing on portraiture, Janskà’s work is challenging the traditional representation of femininity. With their porcelain skin and doll like appearances her models have a disconcerting gaze staring right into the viewers' eyes, not unlike some of Manet's female characters.
Using porcelain dolls as models, her doll-like characters act like symbols of femininity that are, in the end, unattainable. Deprived of physicality and beautifully perfect, her female nudes question erotism and stereotypes with intriguing faces that are reminiscent of classical 18th century British portraiture.
